Meet the Founder

Founder Laura Zimmerman Maye grew up in the Chicago suburbs surrounded by books. What started as her father’s hobby in 1984 has grown int a successful family business selling fine used books online and at various Midwest book fairs. Laura’s favorite books on her family’s shelves were always the cookbooks, which she used as her inspiration for Edible Type _ books for cooks.

Laura’s passion for food grew out of her Italian heritage and watching her nanny prepare amazing family feasts. Shortly after graduating with a Bachelors of Science in Mathematics and Economics from Northwestern University, Laura turned her career toward the food industry. She worked in sales and marketing for Blue Plate Catering, one of Chicago’s top catering firms, before pursuing her masters of Management in Hospitality at Cornell University’s School of Hotel Administration.

Since then, Laura has worked in brand management for Terlato Wines International, the leading marketer of luxury wines in the United States, and as Director of Marketing for Fox & Obel Food Market, a groundbreaking market in Chicago’s specialty food scene. She is also the co-author of two cookbooks: The Great Ceviche Book (published by Ten Speed Press in 2003) with celebrity chef Douglas Rodriguez and Dulce: Desserts in the Latin American Tradition (published by Rizzoli in 2010) with pastry chef Joseluis Flores.

Laura lives in Chicago with her husband Brian and three children: Dylan, Lucas, and Zoe (otherwise known as the pickiest recipe tasters on earth).

My cookbooks remind me of my family and of many past memorable meals. They inspire me to keep learning about real, honest food, where it comes from, and how it will help me live a healthy and happy life. I hope the books you find at Edible Type will do the same for you.
